Introduce Yourself to Our Audience:

I’m Maryann Murray, and I play the fun-loving, lively “Mrs. Fezziwig” in “A Christmas Carol” at the Connecticut Theatre Company in New Britain, CT. Outside of this wonderful production, I’m an independent R&B recording artist, and singer songwriter.

What is your favorite song to sing in the show and why?

The song “Mr. Fezziwig’s Annual Christmas Ball” is such a highlight in the musical. Not only is it the longest number, the energy is through the roof with the lively choreography and charged energy. It really brings everyone together, making you feel the joy of the season. There’s something magical about that moment that just gets both the performers and the audience buzzing. It’s a blast!

What is the most rewarding part of being part of such a large ensemble cast?

It always feels like a collaborative celebration, especially when dress rehearsals kick in. By that point, everyone is comfortable with the script, blocking, and costumes, so it’s all about having fun and supporting one another!

What is your favorite part of the creative process, whether it be during rehearsals or performances?

I actually love the audition process! While it can be nerve-wracking, it’s fascinating to see who gets cast and what the directors’ visions are for each role. The anticipation adds to the excitement! Choreography is especially fun because it helps us all warm up to each other on stage and really connect through our energy.

How does the energy of the audience impact your performance?

I believe the audience plays a bigger role in every production than they might realize. Their energy can really validate our excitement about what’s happening on stage. However, there is also a unique satisfaction in performing for a quiet audience, knowing that you’re so engaged and vibrant that they can’t help but pay attention. Regardless of their reactions, we keep the energy up and deliver a great show. While it’s nice to hear the audience respond, at the end of the day, I feel we owe them more energy than they owe us!

What sort of person is going to love this show?

This show is perfect for anyone who enjoys singing, acting, and the holiday vibe! It’ll really resonate with those who appreciate their loved ones and want to dive into a fun Christmas activity. Whether they’re theater fanatics or just looking for a festive outing, they’re in for a great time!

What is your favorite holiday memory?

It definitely wasn’t fun at the time, but now it makes me laugh. Once, I had a little Christmas concert in pre-school where we had to dress up as angels and Rudolph the red nose reindeer. I wanted to be an angel, but I ended up as Rudolph instead. I kicked and screamed about that silly red nose, feeling like it was the end of the world and totally embarrassing- cried and everything! Looking back now, it’s just so silly, and I realize I looked completely adorable! There’s pictures to prove the cuteness!

“A Christmas Carol” opens on December 6th and runs through December 22nd at Connecticut Theatre Company.  Tickets on sale now!

Lynn Ahrens and Mike Ockrent’s snappy book makes us laugh while the catchy songs (Ahrens also wrote the lyrics) leave us tapping our feet; together, the music and movement contains an irrepressible happiness.” – Arifa Akbar, The Guardian

Although this is a Christmas show, it does have universal themes that may resonate with people of all faiths. The story reminds us of all the poor and lonely people who need help to survive. It brings up continuing battles for compassion and equality, that are as evident today as they were in 1844 London.”Jennifer Goldman, Daily Democrat
